Are spiders dangerous?

Spiders can be extremely dangerous. The black widow spider, which is found in Illinois in small numbers, has venom that can cause nervous system issues. 

However, the majority of spiders in Chicago—and the rest of the country—are not dangerous. Spiders tend to be shy and bite only when they feel threatened.

We usually encounter spiders while they are hunting their food. Once they find an area with food, they tend to stick around.

Where do I find spiders?

Spiders are attracted to properties with lots of insect activity. You’ll often find spiders and webs near light fixtures since that attracts insects that spiders hunt. 

Spiders find their way inside similar to other insects—through gaps in windows and doors, cracks in walls, and more. Once inside, they tend to live in dark, quiet areas: think in basements, closets, underneath furniture and more.

• Regularly cleaning, especially in dark and quiet areas where spiders like to hide, can go a long way to reduce spider activity. 
• And, in general, try to reduce the areas where spiders like to hide.
